MIC Training Weekend

On the 4th and 5th Feb the team stayed at the Tulloch Station Lodge for the annual MIC training weekend.

On Saturday the the team headed to Creag Meagaidh with the MICs to practise navigating on the plateaux, using pacing, timing, bearing and distance. The weather was very wintery with light snow showers and strong winds whipping up spindrift. The ground was quite scoured but with reasonable accumulation in the ‘Window’.  The main learning points were:

1) Bearing

2) Distance

3) Pacing/Timing

4) Mental Map

On Sunday, the destination was Aonach Mor with the target of Golden Oldie – a grade II/III climb. The team boarded the climbers at around 0800 and walked in to base of the climb. We split in to 2 groups, topping out approx. 1400. The weather was overcast, but calm and 0-4o C

Every year, AMRT enlist the help of some Mountain Instructor Certified guides to help with our team training and this year was spent at Tulloch Station Lodge which gave us great access to Meagaidh and Aonach Mor. As a Team we get a lot out of the external training given by the highly qualified instructors. Everything from navigation to winter climbing was on offer and we had some great winter conditions that tested our skills.
