January's Training Weekend

The first AMRT training weekend of 2015 took place at the team bothy at the Spittal of Glenmuick.

On Saturday 3rd January the team divided into two groups. Kenny, Callum, Mike, Kerr and I set off for a big mountain day to work off the extra festive pounds we had accumulated. We did a circular route from the bothy, encompassing Lochnagar, the Stuic and Broad Cairn, before descending the long icy track in the dark back to the bothy. Meanwhile, Iain and Andy went into the Corrie of Lochnagar with the hope to climb. A problem with an ice axe stopped play so instead they scrambled up the West Ridge and over the summit before heading back to the Spittal.

Sunday 4th January was a team training day focussing on winter skills. The day started with avalanche transceiver checks at the bothy, before taking the stretcher up for a walk to the col. Just below the col we found a patch of deep snow to practice digging holes to assess snow pack and avalanche risk. The team also practiced building bucket seats and anchors, and the use of ice axe and crampons. The final part of the day saw all these skills put into practice on a steeper slope to raise and lower the stretcher.

The weekend was a great opportunity for team member to practice winter skills and enjoy the snow and unusual blue skies!
