November 2020

This month started with the team being put on standby on the 2nd of November after a person was reported missing. Thankfully the individual was located safe and well shortly after and the team’s services weren’t needed.

Our monthly training day was on Saturday 14th November and was a search/night navigation exercise, often known as a ‘Dark Ex’, in the area of Lochnagar. The team was split into small groups as per Covid regulations, with different entry/exit points (Gelder, Callater, Spital). We practised various skills in these small groups en route to a 1600 team rendezvous on Carn an t-Sagairt Beag. The weather was light or heavy rain with winds up to 60kph. From the RV we conducted a night-time line search with the whole team, eastwards to the Stuic rim. From here the team split into their small groups and returned to their start points. The evening was a useful and realistic test of team work, hill skills and kit in poor weather and darkness.

Winter is well and truly on its way now with the first small appearances of snow on the tops. Definitely time to get those winter skills up to scratch and those axes and crampons dusted off.
