October 2020

Team member and ex Team Leader Mario Di Maio has been walking and climbing in the Cairngorms since his teens. On the 15th of October he completed his 500th ascent of Lochnagar, this time just for fun and not on a call out or training with the Team. It wasn’t quite the milestone he had planned due to COVID restrictions, however he did manage a dram and slice of cake at the top to celebrate. Congratulations Mario.

On the 18th October the team were training in small, socially distanced groups again, taking various routes towards Ben Macdui while refreshing technical skills at points along the way. Once the different groups had reached the RV point, they combined to undertake a single large line search. Such searches lend themselves well to social distancing!

The first of a string of callouts started on the 20th October. The team were called out alongside Braemar MRT to assist walkers on Ben Macdui. A BMRT party reached the walkers with the assistance of Coastguard helicopter R151 and were safely lifted from the hill. The 27th and 30th of October saw callouts to walkers with lower limb injuries on Bennachie and the Durris area who were both recovered by stretcher. We wish the casualties a quick recovery.
